Navigating Resistance in Coaching – How to befriend your (or your client’s) inner mutineer

Resistance is part of the ecosystem of coaching. If change was as simple as navigating directly from a to b, coaches would be out of a job. Instead, even seemingly routine voyages are susceptible to hijack by a mutineer determined to steer the ship in a completely different direction – whether that shows up as procrastination, self-sabotage, stuckness, ambivalence, or out-and-out rebellion.

But what if the mutineer is right? What if, instead of helping our clients wrest back control of the wheel – the traditional approach of performance coaching – we were to trust the deep wisdom of resistance? What is the dark gift that’s being offered, or the needed breathing space, or the unanticipated outcome we might yet avert?

Coach, supervisor, trainer and real-life voyager NICK THORPE brings a playful, counter-intuitive new compass to this perennial coaching issue, with help from his crew of navigational archetypes – the drifter, the wayfinder, the commander and of course the mutineer.

With customary honesty, Nick shares real-life stories, shadow work insights and examples from nature to explore how the “no” or “wait” of resistance can be as crucial as “yes” to our human flourishing.
