Coaching in the Grey Space: Navigating Complex Client Territory

90-minute Lecture (including Q&A) with Dr. Lauretta Greer

Many coaching conversations don’t stay neatly in the lane of “high functioning goals and performance”. Real human experiences show up: anxiety, grief, trauma history, overwhelm, and moments that feel more clinical than “coachable”. This lecture explores the “grey space” between coaching and therapy, and how to navigate it ethically, confidently, and with care.

Dr. Lauretta Greer will introduce practical, trauma-informed ways to stay grounded when complexity enters the room, without panicking, pathologising, or defaulting to rigid referral thinking. You’ll learn how to hold appropriate boundaries while still meeting the human being in front of you.

In this session, you’ll learn to:

  • Recognise when you are in the grey space and work ethically within it
  • Apply four core frameworks for navigating complex client territory
  • Shift from a “referral” mindset to empowering, collaborative “signposting”
  • Use embodied awareness as a professional compass in challenging moments
  • Contract in a way that honours uncertainty and human complexity
  • Feel more confident when conversations get emotionally intense or ambiguous

Key frameworks introduced:

  • Holding Space: creating a safe container for difficulty
  • Keeping a Watchful Eye: staying aware, steady, and appropriately boundaried
  • Normalising: reducing stigma and supporting the client’s humanity
  • Embodied Awareness: using the body as an instrument for discernment and presence

Why this matters now

Clients don’t arrive compartmentalised. Many carry experiences of trauma, and mental health challenges have increased in recent years. Yet most coach training still assumes a clear separation between coaching and therapy, leaving coaches anxious about “getting it wrong” when complexity appears. This session offers grounded, usable frameworks that support both professional integrity and human responsiveness.
