From Translator to Communications Coach: An Artful Approach to Coaching

Pascale Mayer’s coaching journey is as creative and dynamic as the theatre stages she once graced. From her academic background in International Relations/International Law, via her early work as an actor and concierge in the high-end luxury service sector, to her current roles as a translator/writer, communications coach and lived experience practitioner, Pascale’s path is one of resilience, creativity, and a deep passion for empowering others. With a coaching style that combines empathy, humor, and a theatrical touch, Pascale describes herself as a “hope enhancer” and “thinking partner,” helping clients navigate life’s challenges with authenticity and care.

“Coaching is about being fully present with someone, meeting them where they are, and helping them see the possibilities within themselves,” Pascale shares. “It’s not just a profession—it’s a way of being.”

In this interview, Pascale reflects on her unconventional career path, her commitment to supporting marginalized communities, and the lived experiences that inform her transformative approach to coaching.

From Translator to Coach: A Journey of Reinvention

Pascale’s coaching journey began in 2013 when she was invited to work with refugees and migrants in Germany, helping them integrate into a new culture and navigate the labor market. “Writing is a lonely job, so I was very thankful for this exciting opportunity. I didn’t think of myself as a coach back then,” she explains. “I saw myself as a language teacher, but I was doing so much more. Most of my students were doctors and lawyers. I created an empathy training programme for them which included role-playing, building confidence, and creating a safe space for connection and growth.

Her international background—being born in France, raised in Germany, and spending 12 years in the US—has given Pascale a unique perspective on communication and connection.
“Having lived and worked across different cultures, I’ve seen how communication isn’t just about words—it’s about understanding the person in front of you and adapting to their cultural context.”

Her work often extended beyond the classroom, with activities ranging from going to the movies and visiting museums to taking walks through nature and having fun at pub quizzes. “It was about connecting on an emotional level, not just teaching language skills. Through shared experiences, we built trust and openness, which created a foundation for learning and personal growth.”

This hands-on, relational approach continues to define Pascale’s coaching style today.

Coaching as a Craft and an Art

Pascale views coaching as both a craft and an art, shaped by empathy, creativity, and the ability to hold space for others. “Coaching isn’t about tools and techniques—it’s about the magic that happens when two people connect authentically,” she says.

Her background in the dramatic arts has profoundly influenced her coaching approach. “Working with theatrical methods, with poetry, music, art, etc. allows clients to explore emotions in a safe, playful way, helping them gain insights and build resilience,” Pascale explains. “I’ve always believed in the power of feeling feelings rather than just talking about them.”

One of her favorite techniques is role-playing: “For example, I might help a client rehearse a challenging conversation or explore how they’d step into a new role at work. It’s a playful yet powerful way to build confidence and gain perspective.”

Keeping Hope Alive

A recurring theme in Pascale’s work is the idea of keeping hope alive—a philosophy rooted in her own lived experiences. “In my youth, I struggled with an eating disorder, and depression is something I still struggle with to this day,” she shares. “What has always kept me going was my faith and the belief that there had to be a reason I was still here. I wanted to be the person for others that I often needed during those moments.”

This ethos carries through to her coaching: “When working with refugees and migrants, when working with any client, it isn’t about telling them what to do—it’s about helping them rediscover a sense of safety, connection, and hope. It’s those small moments of trust and presence that make the biggest difference.”

Her personal resilience shines through her career pivots—from actor to concierge, from translator to coach. “Life hasn’t always gone to plan,” she reflects. “But those twists and turns have taught me that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about finding meaning in each step of the journey.”

A Transformative Journey with Animas

Pascale received a Certificate in Coaching from the University of Cambridge. She credits her time with Animas as another pivotal moment in her professional coaching journey. “I felt so enriched by the variety of viewpoints and approaches Animas offered,” Pascale shares. “It wasn’t about being taught one definitive way—it was an invitation to explore and take what resonated with me.”

She also highlights the collaborative and thought-provoking nature of the courses: “What I valued most was the openness to critical thinking and the encouragement to question and engage deeply with the material. It kept me on my toes and inspired me to continue growing as a person, not just as a coach.”

This experience reinforced Pascale’s belief in the power of diverse perspectives and reflective practice: “Animas provided a platform for meaningful learning and connection, which has influenced how I approach my clients and their unique journeys.”

Looking Ahead: Coaching and Mental Health

Pascale is currently focused on expanding her work in mental health coaching, an area she feels passionately about. “Mental health challenges are increasingly common, and coaching has a unique role to play in supporting people through them,” she says. “I’m excited to deepen my understanding and bring even more value to my clients.”

She is also pursuing further training with Animas, including a Mental Health in Coaching course, and is committed to lifelong learning. “Even after decades of work, I see learning as a constant companion,” Pascale reflects. “There’s always more to learn and explore, and I’m excited for whatever comes next.”

Final Thoughts

Pascale Mayer’s journey from theater and hospitality to translation and coaching is a testament to the power of adaptability, creativity, and lived experience. Her ability to combine empathy with practical tools has made her a transformative force for her clients, helping them navigate challenges with confidence and hope.

“Coaching is about holding space for transformation,” Pascale says. “It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them find their own path forward.”

Through her commitment to mental health, lifelong learning, and creative exploration, Pascale continues to inspire those she works with. Her journey reminds us that life’s twists and turns can become stepping stones to something greater.

“We don’t have to have it all figured out,” she reflects. “It’s the journey, the connections, and the courage to keep going that matter most.”
