From International Leadership and People Development to Transformative Coaching

With a career spanning continents, industries, and executive roles, Michelle Tonnesen has carved a unique path as an executive advisor, business consultant, and transformative coach. Her business, MAIA, is rooted in her passion for helping individuals and organisations navigate change, thrive, and achieve sustainable growth. Drawing on over 20 years of experience in international leadership and people development, Michelle’s work is defined by empathy, expertise, and a commitment to personal transformation.

“I thrive on helping people become the best they can be,” Michelle shares. “Whether it’s a team unlocking their potential or an individual overcoming personal barriers, I’m here to support the whole person.”

In this interview, Michelle reflects on her journey from management consultant to C-level executive to transformative coach, sharing the challenges, inspirations, and lessons that shape her work.

A Career Shaped by Change

Michelle’s professional journey began in management consultancy, where she honed her skills in problem-solving, communication, and strategic thinking. However, the high-pressure environment left her questioning the values driving her career. “I was running so fast, always chasing the next promotion, but deep down, I knew it didn’t align with my values,” she recalls. “Eventually, I hit the wall and realised I needed to redefine what success looked like for me.”

This epiphany led Michelle to explore roles that centred on people and culture, including stints as Global Head of HR, COO, and Chief People Officer. These experiences not only broadened her expertise but also deepened her passion for supporting others.

“I’ve worked with everyone—from graduates to CEOs—and I’ve seen how coaching can empower individuals and teams to overcome challenges and achieve incredible results.”

The Birth of MAIA: Coaching for Growth

In 2022, Michelle founded MAIA, named after the Roman goddess of growth. The name reflects her commitment to fostering development in both individuals and organisations:
“Growth is at the heart of what I do—whether it’s helping a team navigate change or supporting an individual to reach their full potential.”

Balancing consulting and coaching, Michelle works with clients ranging from startups to multinational corporations. Her services span leadership development, career coaching, and transformative life coaching. “Many clients come to me with a specific challenge, only to discover it’s connected to something deeper. That’s why I believe in coaching the whole person—it’s about addressing not just the symptoms but the underlying causes.”

Navigating Challenges: The Power of Clarity

Michelle acknowledges that transitioning from consultancy to coaching brought its own challenges, particularly in maintaining clear boundaries between her roles: “As a consultant, you’re expected to provide answers, but as a coach, it’s about guiding clients to find their own solutions. It took time and self-awareness to adapt, but now I can confidently switch hats as needed.”

Effective contracting has been key to this balance: “Good contracting ensures everyone is on the same page about what they need from the session. Whether I’m coaching or consulting, clarity is essential to maintaining trust and delivering value whilst also adhering to the Global Code of Ethics for Coaches.”

Coaching the Whole Person

Michelle’s coaching philosophy is rooted in a holistic approach. Drawing on her certifications in transformative coaching and psychology for high performance, she helps clients explore the beliefs, values, and behaviours underlying their challenges. “Whether you’re a high-flying executive or a stay-at-home parent, we all face limiting beliefs and emotional struggles. Coaching provides a safe space to unpack those and find a sustainable way forward.”

This approach resonates deeply with clients, who often describe Michelle’s sessions as transformational. “I love seeing clients have their ‘eureka’ moments—that instant where a new perspective unlocks something they didn’t think was possible. It’s incredibly rewarding.”

A Global Perspective

Having lived and worked across Europe and the Middle East, Michelle’s international experience has profoundly influenced her coaching style. She reflects on the challenges of adapting to new cultures, languages, and professional environments: “Every time I’ve moved countries, I’ve had to reinvent myself—professionally and personally. That adaptability has shaped how I support my clients, helping them navigate uncertainty with confidence.”

Michelle’s journey has taken her from bustling European capitals to the unique landscapes of the Middle East and even the remote beauty of the Isle of Man. Each location has provided valuable lessons in intercultural communication and resilience: “Moving countries isn’t just about logistics—it’s about starting from scratch. Professionally, you may need to rebuild networks, and personally, you’re learning entirely new ways of connecting with people.”

This lived experience has made her acutely aware of the emotional complexities her clients often face, whether they’re tackling career transitions, leadership challenges, or cultural shifts: “I’ve been there—feeling like you’re stepping into the unknown. Coaching offers a safe space to explore those uncertainties and find the confidence to take the next step.”

The Animas Connection

Michelle completed her transformative coaching diploma with Animas in 2023, adding depth and versatility to her practice: “I wanted a broader toolbox to support clients as whole people, not just professionals. Animas provided that, along with a supportive community and the opportunity for deep personal growth.”

Despite facing personal challenges during her training, Michelle found the experience to be a lifeline: “Coaching gave me a way to focus on the future and help others, even while navigating my own difficulties. It was both challenging and healing.”

Looking Ahead: Growth and Impact

Michelle’s vision for MAIA is one of expansion and impact: “I want to help as many people and organisations as possible, whether that’s through executive coaching, team development, or transformative life coaching. Growth is a journey, and I’m here to support it every step of the way.”

She also sees potential in blending coaching with her writing background: “Storytelling is such a powerful tool. I’d love to explore how sharing stories of growth and transformation can inspire others.”

Final Thoughts

Michelle’s journey exemplifies the power of resilience and adaptability. From navigating the corporate world to building a thriving coaching practice, her career is a testament to the transformative potential of growth.
