Would you make a good coach? It’s a good question to ask, and simply asking it tells you you have perhaps the most important quality under your belt: the desire to be a good coach!

Animas’ approach to coaching is one which is collaborative, and about facilitating discovery for your client. It’s not about giving advice, although there will be occasions where it is appropriate to offer an idea or an experience.

There are certainly some qualities you need to have even before you become a coach. Skills can be learned but the underlying qualities are what bring you to coaching in the first place and that will support you in your journey. You will likely be:

  • Interested in people and care about making a difference
  • Curious about the different ways people see the world
  • Energised by increasing people’s self-understanding, fulfilment and enjoyment of life
  • Able to listen and hear what someone is telling you
  • Reflective on your own world-view, including your values, beliefs, assumptions, and emotional triggers
  • Positive and believe that change in people is possible
  • Able to notice patterns and ways people behave that create their outcomes

Besides these qualities, there are many skills you need to be a coach but that’s where we come in! Skills that you may not have now, such as asking powerful questions, can be developed and part of our role is to help you develop them.

We’re not looking for clones. We encourage everyone to bring their own style and way of being to their coaching – so you might be calm and reflective, or more feisty and challenging. Essentially, there’s no right type of person, but the wish to be a good coach might be the most desirable ingredient!
