“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”
George Bernard Shaw
Peter Hyson begins his fascinating book "Coaching with Meaning and Spirituality" with this quote from Shaw - though sensitively leaving out the whole "clod of ailments" thing!
What Peter was no doubt touched by in this quote is the innate feeling so many of us have that there is more to life than the daily grind, the relentless pursuit of satisfaction, and the focus on the Self.
Over the past decade, as more people look for something beyond themselves, the solipsistic attention to be “self-development” feels increasingly lacking in something truly human.
The constant striving for individual achievement, it seems, may be shifting as more people explore how to connect to something greater than themselves.
Indeed, this seems ever more apparent in millennials who, time and again, show greater interest in living purposeful lives than in gaining material wealth.
But, whilst this urge for something greater, even transcendent, remains, many people do not find their answers within organised religions.
That's why working with spirituality in coaching is becoming vitally important, particularly as the millennial generation become the de facto market for coaches.
Yet spiritual coaching can prove difficult and unfamiliar for coaches as they struggle to hold a space of deep personal and spiritual enquiry whilst putting aside their own beliefs and values.
In this advanced two-day coach training course created exclusively for Animas, Peter Hyson, author of Coaching with Meaning and Spirituality and more recently Live the Work You Love will share what he has found works in coaching with spirituality.
“In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself within a dark woods where the straight way was lost.”
Dante Alighieri, Inferno
There's certainly nothing new about the feeling of gnawing doubt about the point of life and Dante penned these words at the height of the established church. Yet, more than ever, we are experiencing and questioning where we are in the "dark woods" of life.
Drawing from traditions such as transpersonal psychology, existentialism and emotional intelligence, Peter will share a wealth of theoretical frameworks, practical models and mindsets that enable you to coach around a client's deep sense of meaning, quest and spirituality.
Peter will cover concepts including:
Using "Gateway” terminology and questions to allow spiritually attuned conversations to emerge
What Spiritual Intelligence (SQ) is and why it’s important to the 21st century
Using the Balanced Life framework of Live, Love, Learn and Legacy
Supporting a client to take the Existential Leap and how to support clients in this endeavour
Exploring Signature Strengths and how to use them effectively
Understanding Mythic Entrancement and its powerful pull from a meaningful life
The difference between the search for meaning and the search for spirituality
How to recognise and build spiritually-intelligent leaders and clients
The 21 Skills of Spiritually Intelligent Coaches and Leaders
To get a flavour of Peter’s ideas, take a listen to an interview that Animas founder, Nick Bolton, carried out with him a couple years ago here: app.vzaar.com/videos/7251160. It’s a fascinating listen!
The course is designed to allow coaches to explore those occasions where a client’s search for meaning, purpose and calling needs to be addressed and explored and the wide-ranging themes will offer multiples door ways to explore.
This workshop is designed for qualified coaches and has been recognised by the International Coach Federation as providing 12 hours of Continuing Coach Education and so can be used for coaches renewing their ICF credentials.
The course is is unique to Animas and cannot be found anywhere else. We do not have plans to make it a regular event as we have so many other fascinating coaching topics to cover so if this feels like something you'd like to learn, please do book your spot!
