When I first came to coaching my life seemed great, well, on the outside anyway. I was living in London with my boyfriend who I had a great relationship with. I was also growing my own business which afforded me both the flexibility and financial freedom to do a lot of the things I wanted to do.
The problem was it hadn’t turned out the way I’d planned. I trained as a Speech and Language Therapist, the plan had been to work in the NHS helping people communicate with their loved ones. That hadn’t worked out though and I felt disconnected and adrift, unsure if my new direction was the right one. I was unhappy with myself for finding it all so difficult.
I trained as a Speech and Language Therapist, the plan had been to work in the NHS helping people communicate with their loved ones. That hadn’t worked out though and I felt disconnected and adrift, unsure if my new direction was the right one. I was unhappy with myself for finding it all so difficult.
At this point, I knew I needed to do something different, but I didn’t know what. I didn’t know how to move forward. It was a friend who suggested I looked into coaching. I was intrigued by the prospect of having someone support me to look forward, to help me find my way again.
“The first time I spoke to my coach it felt like a weight had been lifted. I felt fully heard and understood. They were confident they could support me in moving forward, which was exactly what I wanted. It was the connection I needed so badly. I signed up for 6 sessions, which took me through a range of topics, twists and turns and so much growth. I loved everything I learnt and the process I went on”.
That’s what led me to train as a coach myself. I’ve always wanted to help people on that personal level. This desire was part of the reason I was so unhappy in my business; I didn’t feel like I was really helping people in a way that mattered. I wanted that one to one connection coaching allows. My coach was the one who recommended Animas to me, and to be honest I never really looked anywhere else.
Since qualifying, as I’ve come into contact with other coaches and heard about their training experiences, it’s made me so grateful that I didn’t look anywhere else. I was drawn to the small group sizes for the training and the community ethos Animas builds throughout. Training as a coach requires you to go on a journey of personal discovery and you want to do that surrounded by people who understand and support it…
“The Animas community provides just that. I’ve heard since about courses that are distance learning, or groups in the 100s and cannot imagine experiencing the journey that way”.
Over the course of my Animas training, I had a number of transformations both personally and in my life. My boyfriend became my husband, we decided to shut down my business and moved out of London. These changes are what made me focus my coaching business the way I have.
Because of the relocating and closing of my business I jumped into my coaching feet first. Building a new business from the ground up, in a new location with no support network, created pressure in my relationship. Our dynamics changed for a number of reasons and our first year of marriage was the most challenging one of our entire relationship. But the skills and understanding I’d gained from my coaching experience allowed us to grow together and come out of that period stronger.
This made me realise how challenging it is to go through a period of change when you’re in a long-term relationship. How divided you can feel because of the changes. It showed me the importance of staying connected to yourself so you can stay connected to your relationship. So you can grow together rather than grow apart.
Relationships are such a vital part of human existence and yet we’re never taught what makes a relationship a good one, or how to make it last. I believe building strong, long-lasting connection starts with you understanding yourself at a personal level, knowing what you want and need from life and being able to effectively communicate that to your loved ones.
I’m on a mission to spread this message, inspire people to expect better relationships and use my transformational coaching to work one to one with people to put these foundations in place even if they’ve been with their partner for years.
