At Animas, we don’t just believe in transformation coaching, we’re leading its evolution. Transformational coaching, sometimes called transformative coaching, has not yet reached its complete end-point. It’s still growing in terms of momentum, scope, and power. It is, we believe, the biggest trend in coaching theory on a global scale. However, we don’t believe it’s a passing fad. Instead, we’ve seen the immense benefit it can bring to individuals and organisations, and as such are happy to be part of its evolution.

The History of Transformational Coaching

Transformational coaching now, and in the future, is being shaped by what’s gone before. Coaching, per se, still has a relatively young history. However, already we’re waving goodbye to some of the more dinosaur methods of old. Instead, coaching is becoming an increasingly professional endeavour, as it really should.

Transformational coaching draws its roots from a number of places and schools of thought. It takes what has proven valuable in old-school coaching methods and draws them together with new and deeper insights.

In fact, transformational coaching is part of such an evolutionary process, gradually developing and adapting from other methods, you can’t even pin down when such a ‘thing’ started. This brings something incredibly powerful to coaching because it brings to the client all the benefits of learning which have gone before, and connects them on a deeper, more substantial, level.

Transformational coaching, with its focus on enabling clients to change and transform how they feel, think, and act, can only have come about through the profession gaining experience and reputation whilst drawing on developments in psychology and neuroscience. It has also evolved due to a divergence between what our clients understand, and what they succeed in putting in to practice over the long-term.

The Methodologies and Practices Behind Transformational Coaching

Therefore, the central tenet of transformational coaching is about identifying and utilising what it is that enables real change. Not just ‘good intentions’ but real sustained transformation.

Transformational Coaching has therefore evolved to utilise many different methodologies in a person-centred approach. We see methodology drawn from Psychodrama, Gestalt psychotherapy, Neuroscience, and others. No single methodology rules the roost, but all are drawn from in order to enable and sustain transformation.

Evolution of Transformational Coaching in Practice

In practice, this means that transformational coaches are capable of working on a deeper and more exacting level. This kind of coaching can only happen on a bedrock of support, trust, and non-judgemental encouragement. Changing someone’s thinking can only happen in a very safe and secure environment.

It’s a tall order and requires immense self-awareness and presence on behalf of the transformational coach, combined with a skilled and experienced hand. It takes courage to challenge the status quo on behalf of a client and to stay present in uncomfortable moments even knowing this is where the greatest change can occur. It’s about more than a thought process, but a way of being with the client.

This is why it is essential that training specifically focused on transformational coaching is imperative for those seeking to become a transformational coach, or to work on a more profound level with clients. How Transformational Coaching is Evolving for the Future

We’re not there yet. There are still lessons to be learned, and changes to be made to transformational coaching itself. The shift is happening, however, and transformational coaching will in time come to simply be ‘coaching’ itself, with all other types falling under its umbrella.
